Your child’s first trip to his/her dentist should be a memorable experience. Bringing them to a dentist at a young age is important in order to properly educate them on the importance of good oral health. Here at Discovery Dental, we can guarantee that your child’s oral health is in good hands. From the moment you and your family enter our dental clinic, we want you and your child to feel as comfortable as possible. The more knowledgeable you and your child are about your dental health after leaving our office, the better you will feel.
Parents should bring their child to a kids dentist in Issaquah Highlands around the time of their first first birthday. It is important that whenever their newly erupted teeth emerge, they should receive proper dental care from a dentist.
When will my child’s new teeth emerge?
Your child’s baby teeth begin to emerge between the ages of six to twelve months, and will continue to emerge until their third birthday. You should expect tenderness and soreness on his/her gums. To prevent discomfort, we suggest that you soothe the gums by rubbing a cool, wet cloth over them to reduce swelling. You can also utilize a teething ring, if your child prefers. Whenever your child has finished teething, you can expect a full set of 20 primary teeth, which comprises their beautiful new set of “baby teeth”!
As your child reaches the age of four, his/her jaw and facial bones will begin to develop, allowing space between the primary teeth for their permanent adult teeth to grow. Your child’s first teeth will eventually begin falling out once he/she reaches the age of six or seven years old. During this period, you will notice that your child’s permanent teeth will continue to surface through their gums until they reach their 21st birthday. Ultimately, most adults gain a full set of 32 permanent teeth (including four wisdom teeth).
Adopting Healthy Oral Hygiene Practices
Teaching your child on how he/she will maintain proper oral care is an essential skill, as it is an investment in his/her health which will last a lifetime. You may want to supervise your child every two weeks as his/her teeth begin to erupt. Keep in mind that no matter how much your child loves to indulge in sweets, sugary foods and liquids will attack their shiny new teeth, and will eventually result in tooth decay.
We suggest that you encourage your child to brush his/her teeth at least three to four times a day after meals, and before bedtime at night. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush along with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Brushing can be fun, and your child should begin their brushing habits shortly after his/her first tooth emerges. It is not recommended for children younger than two years to begin brushing with fluoride toothpaste until your children’s dentist in Issaquah Highlands instructs you to do so.
Flossing is also an important practice which you should teach to your child. Your dentist will discuss an appropriate age to introduce flossing with you. If you notice any signs of tooth decay, it is better to bring your child to a dentist for an appointment.
Prevent Tooth Decay with Regular Checkups
Tooth decay usually occurs when plaque builds up on your teeth and begins to break down the surface enamel. It is often caused by residual sugars which break down into corrosive acids over time. Children are at a high risk for tooth decay since they generally do not observe good oral hygiene habits. Brushing and flossing will certainly go a long way in preventing your child from suffering tooth decay.
We recommend that you bring your child to a dentist every six months for their routine dental cleanings and checkups. Fluoride treatments, along with cleanings, biannually usually helps keep their teeth strong and healthy. Dentists also suggest tooth sealants because they form a seal between the deep grooves in your child’s teeth, preventing plaque from forming in these hard-to-reach areas. Sealants may last for a few years, but will need to be monitored by the dentist during your child’s checkup.
