How Does Virtual Care Work?
The Invisalign company has worked diligently during 2020 to release their virtual appointment and virtual care services, which we are now able to use at our dental clinic here in Issaquah, Washington. We are happy to offer remote checkups during the Invisalign process—this means fewer appointments and more convenience for you throughout your treatment.

How Can Dentistry Happen Remotely?
General dentistry, in which we physically clean or fix your teeth, cannot be performed virtually. But for your Invisalign clear aligners treatment, your local orthodontist who is treating you through your clear aligners simply needs to check your progress against your treatment plan.
There are no wires for Dr. Vanama to tighten to continue your treatment—you simply switch to the next set of aligners that you already have at home!
The Virtual Consultation Process
After you search for “Invisalign near me,” have your in-person consultation with Dr. Vanama, and then pick up your clear aligners, here’s how you’ll participate in digital dentistry remotely:
Take Progress Pictures and Videos
You’ll take pictures and videos of your teeth on a regular schedule and upload them through your Invisalign app—your app will remind you when to do this. Your Invisalign dentist will see how much your teeth have moved and give recommendations just as well as if you physically visited our dentist office.
Every time you switch to a new set of aligners, your Invisalign doctor needs just a single video of your smile and three pictures:
- A video of your teeth while wearing your invisible braces and using cheek retractors.
- A picture of your smile with your bite open, wearing aligners and using cheek retractors.
- A picture of your smile with no aligners or cheek retractors.
- A picture of your teeth with a closed bite, with no aligners, but using cheek retractors.
With these different types of pictures, holistic dentist Dr. Vanama will be able to see how your bite is improving and your teeth are moving. This gives us a thorough survey of your Invisalign results. And it gives you the confidence that an experienced dentist is guiding your treatment.
We give you cheek retractors that will help you take pictures that show all of your teeth. This is a benefit to you, because higher-quality photos help your dentist to see your progress better and make sure you are on track. Plus, it’s difficult to hold your phone and take pictures of all your teeth at the same time without cheek retractors.
If you lose your cheek retractors or need a quick way to retract your cheeks, we may recommend you use a couple of spoons as a temporary workaround. But talk to us first before you try anything!

Most of the time, if your treatment is going according to plan, the feedback you will receive through your app will simply say “On track.” That means that you have been wearing your aligners enough and that your teeth are moving as expected in your personalized plan. You can just keep doing what you have now made your routine.
You might sometimes receive the message “Instructions.” This just means that an adjustment to your routine is needed, which will help you get the brilliant smile you want. For example, you might need to wear your aligners for another hour or two per day. You can use the “Update Settings” button in the Invisalign app if you need to change the times you wear your aligners.
Other Features
You can also use the “wear timer” in your Invisalign app. This helps you stay accountable and make progress toward your own goal of an ideal smile. It will show you if you need to tweak your routine, and it will send your wear time to your dentist.
The appointment tracker feature can help you remember any appointments. You can also use the social features to show your social circle how much progress you’re making and create before and after pictures.
