Prevent cavities and tooth decay with fluoride treatments from our Issaquah dentist
Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps to make tooth enamel healthier. It is present in many foods and beverages, but unfortunately, Americans do not receive enough fluoride in this manner to benefit from it. That is why Dr. Vanama recommends fluoride treatments at the office of Discovery Dental. Fluoride helps to prevent cavities and tooth decay when applied directly to the teeth or used in another manner. It also prevents the build-up of plaque that can cause gum disease and other oral health issues. Dr. Vanama routinely gives fluoride treatments to children and offers it to adults with the following issues:
- Constant dry mouth
- Exposed tooth roots
- Cracks in tooth enamel
- Dental restorations or orthodontia that makes it hard to clean certain areas in the mouth
- Health issues such as diabetes, eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and cancer
- An active bacterial infection or untreated tooth decay
- Poor diet and/or oral hygiene
What to Expect During a Fluoride Treatment
Dr. Vanama typically applies a fluoride treatment immediately after completing a routine cleaning of your teeth or your child’s teeth. She paints them with a foam, gel, liquid, or paste in a variety of flavors. Bubble gum flavored fluoride treatments are especially popular with children. After the teeth are completely coated, your dentist in Issaquah leaves the solution on for several minutes. She then rinses the mouth and asks you or your child to spit the rest of the fluoride out without using any water.
Our staff will provide you with instructions on what to eat and avoid following a fluoride treatment. We usually request that the patient refrains from eating or drinking anything for 30 minutes following the procedure. This ensures that the substance doesn’t wash off completely before it can provide the full benefit. It’s normal for the teeth to feel sticky for the remainder of the day. This is actually a sign that the fluoride is doing its job.
Caring for Teeth After a Fluoride Treatment
As with every other type of dental procedure, it’s important to practice excellent oral hygiene following a fluoride treatment. You or your child should use toothpaste with fluoride in it to receive the greatest benefit from this substance. However, this doesn’t take the place of professional fluoride treatments with your dentist in Issaquah.
