The Different Types of Orthodontics
There are multiple treatments to help your smile. Ask Dr. Vanama for more information.
- Ceramic/Clear Braces
We create ceramic braces with clear material so they are less visible to others. Because ceramic braces are larger and more prone to breaking than metal braces, you must commit to proper oral hygiene. Most patients choose ceramic braces for their upper or front teeth and traditional braces on lower teeth.
- Clear Aligners
Also known as Invisalign®, clear aligners consist of a set of removable acrylic trays that gently move your teeth into place. You can easily remove them to eat, drink, and care for your oral hygiene. You switch to a new aligner approximately every two weeks. Other people usually can’t discern when you’re wearing clear aligners.
- Gold Braces
Gold braces are constructed of stainless steel and coated in gold. You may appreciate gold braces if you want to make a fashion statement and don’t mind others knowing about your orthodontic treatment.
- Lingual Braces
We create lingual braces from metal and customize them to the exact shape of your teeth. Lingual braces are installed behind your teeth, therefore making them invisible to others.
- Self-Ligating Braces
We use the same type of materials to create self-ligating braces that we use for traditional metal braces. The major difference is there is no elastic involved in treatment, which means that you don’t have to come in for check-ups so often. Instead of elastic, we use a specialized clip to ensure that the archwire guides your teeth to the desired position.
- Traditional Metal Braces
These types of braces remain the most popular option in orthodontic treatment. Patients consistently report satisfaction with comfort and results. You have the option of choosing different colored wiring at each visit for a unique look throughout your treatment.
After avoiding the dentist after several bad experiences, I decided after reading other positive reviews to give them a try. I am so glad I did! Gentle, thorough, and willing to explain what is going to happen at each appointment has won me over!

Have Questions About Orthodontics?
- How does orthodontic treatment work?
All types of braces put pressure on your teeth which cause them to slowly shift positions. Before you receive your new braces, our dentist creates a treatment plan showing how your teeth should look when the braces are removed. Orthodontia has improved greatly in the past several years, which means that you have more options for straightening your teeth and can expect a shorter duration of treatment than in the past.
- How long does treatment take?
Your age, the severity of your orthodontic issues, and the treatment you choose all play a role in how long you can expect to wear braces. You ultimately control the duration of your treatment through your commitment to following instructions and proper oral hygiene. You will have the opportunity to discuss orthodontic options, cost, and expected treatment time with your doctor during your initial consultation.
